Destruction of the Lux Guards

Chasing Sunlight

The Destruction of the Lux Guards marks the moment when the Illuminated King's institutional power fails before the reality it claims to govern. At Bright Defile, Jonathan Heights directs sunlight against Antomine and the guardians sent to enforce his command; their melting removes the last armed interruption between Jonathan and the final threshold of his expedition.

Causes and Background

The confrontation grows out of the opposing purposes that have governed the expedition from its beginning. Jonathan Heights has assembled the journey to recover sunlight, which the authorities of Beacon treat as an uncertain or dangerous claim. The Illuminated King nevertheless takes an interest in the discovery, sends an agent to safeguard his interests, and gives Jonathan the Illuminated King's token. Antomine therefore joins the expedition not merely as a chaplain but as an active representative of royal and inquisitorial authority.

Antomine's training combines priestly duties with languages and zint weaponry. His governing principle is that humanity belongs to the light and that secrets drawing people toward the darkness must be purged. This conviction repeatedly turns practical decisions into religious tests: he forbids the use of alien fruit even when it might aid the expedition, and later insists that a possible Umbraught threat at Angkor Leng cannot simply be ignored. Jonathan, by contrast, treats the expedition's resources and time as belonging to the search for sunlight, resisting Antomine's demand that the party become an instrument of the Inquisition.

The stakes become explicit when Antomine explains that his role is to safeguard the humanity of the Illuminated King's people. In sunlight, he is compelled to admit that a man such as Jonathan mastering secrets beyond even the Illuminated King's comprehension would threaten everything the king has built. The Lux Guards' attack is thus not an independent military action but the material expression of a threatened order: they move to stop Jonathan because Antomine can no longer permit him to proceed.

What Happens at Bright Defile

Jonathan first rejects Antomine's authority, telling him that the expedition has gone beyond the point where his commands matter. Antomine answers that royal responsibility alone requires him to intervene. He then orders Jonathan to come back, reaching through a hidden connection to something in Jonathan's identity as a human from the west. The command attempts to awaken an obedience deeper than ordinary persuasion.

Jonathan answers by allowing sunlight to pass through him and expose that connection. The light burns away the concealed tether and the hidden motivations attached to it. His anger then overwhelms the lesser brilliance of zint. Antomine screams as the white light in his pupils burns, and the Lux Guards leap forward to seize Jonathan.

They fail. The guardians melt in the sunlight, their zint leaking out as their armor falls to the ground. A great wind passes over the spreading puddles of metal and wax, turning them to salt. Antomine collapses to his knees, the white in his pupils gone, and is left looking like a man lost. Jonathan does not continue the argument or wait for another command; he turns his back on the inquisitor and faces Bright Defile, treating the destruction of the guardians as the end of the interruption.

Immediate Consequences

The melting of the Lux Guards strips Antomine's authority of its most visible enforcement. His royal connection cannot compel Jonathan, his guardians cannot restrain him, and the symbols of the Illuminated King's power become inert material in the sun. Zint, which elsewhere illuminates human civilization and arms its defenders, is revealed here as subordinate to sunlight rather than equivalent to it.

The scene also changes Jonathan's physical and moral position. He advances through the ancient salt statues toward a threshold where a barrier of understanding becomes indistinguishable from a barrier in the land itself. His cane, previously a support and weapon, is eventually sacrificed as a thin sword-blade across the final gap. The loss of the cane follows the destruction of the guardians as part of the same stripping-away: the expedition's protective instruments, inherited assumptions, and remaining attachments cannot accompany him into the final passage.

Relation to the Expedition's Ideologies

The event reverses the political language of light used by the western human lands. At Danby's Point, human civilization is marked by blue-white zint illumination, while the architecture and inhabitants beyond the great gate are classified as darker forces. The boundary is unstable: alien influence pulls human construction out of its straight lines, while nearby alien spires are drawn toward human regularity. Tiuni's maps and intelligence likewise show that the eastern world is not empty darkness but a shifting field of peoples, houses, caravans, beasts, and ancient ruins.

Against that complicated borderland, Antomine's doctrine insists on a clean division between humanity and darkness. He speaks for walls, purification, and the conversion of darkness into something human-controlled. Jonathan's passage through Bright Defile exposes the limitation of that doctrine. The Lux Guards, built to embody protective light, cannot survive the actual sun. Their destruction does not simply defeat soldiers; it reveals that the regime's manufactured illumination and its claim to safeguard humanity are inadequate before a truth outside its control.

Narrative Significance and Ending

The Destruction of the Lux Guards is the practical climax of the Jonathan Heights–Antomine conflict. Earlier, Antomine's condemnations made Jonathan feel threatened even when they were spoken as general doctrine; at Bright Defile, the threat becomes direct and the hidden bond between royal authority and Jonathan's western identity is brought into the open. Sunlight forces Antomine to speak more honestly, then gives Jonathan the power to sever the relation that speech attempts to enforce.

After the guardians dissolve, Jonathan crosses the final darkness and enters Bright Defile. He finds a green country beneath a vast blue sky, with mountains, white clouds, rivers, and the sun itself. He feels its warmth, the free wind at his back, and the liberty of truth, and he smiles. Far to the west, his shadow stretches from the furthest east to Beacon, where the Illuminated King stands in his tower. For a moment Jonathan appears as a titan bestriding the world before the image vanishes. The guardians' destruction therefore functions as the threshold's last violence: once the machinery of imposed light has melted, Jonathan reaches the sunlight that the expedition was created to find.
